Child’s Play: Something Casual

I attended the Pre-Employment Seminar at school yesterday to help us equip ourselves in handling job interviews and “power dressing”. It is also to prepare us for the Campus Recruitment today. If I have time, I will be sharing you some insights that I learned. San Miguel Brewery, Inc. had specifically requested to interview graduating students from BA Anthropology and of course, BA Communication Arts.

I feel so nervous, because this is going to be my first actual “job interview” experience; although I’ve already been in one when we had a mock interview for our Business and Corporate Communications Class two semesters ago. I hope these jitters won’t get me into trouble later at one. While writing this entry, my mind’s also busy thinking of what ensemble to put on. But anyway, here’s what I wore for the seminar.

I obviously played safe on this outfit by using a bag, belt (not shown in the photo) and shoes with the same color. Conventional fashion states that we have to stick on such unspoken rule; but of course in the modern times, we can do whatever we want in the name of style just as long as the alterations won’t make us look terrible.

My mother used to own that Jade Duck bag I used. She got fed up with it so she kept it. When I saw it from its hiding place in our cabinet, I gave it an immediate fancy. It still looks nice even after a long time. I consider it a true vintage item. Mom said, it was one of her valuable things back then because it’s quite expensive.

I’ve had that Uniqlo tank top in my wardrobe since last year; but I couldn’t make up my mind on what to pair it with, so I decided to just wait for the right partner for it. When my Mom bought me this vest, I didn’t have any second thoughts of putting it together with my white tank. Do you think I’ve made the right choice lovelies?

Now, let’s talk about my accessories and my shoes. I got that two-toned earrings from my Mom as a giveaway for her 50th birthday two years ago. About my feather necklace, it’s one of my recent purchases. I bought it that same day from a friend who owns an online shop, and I’m so glad that it looked so fine with my casual get-up.

I’m no closet queen when it comes to my enthusiasm for oxfords/brogues. I love them because they make any get-up look edgy and androgynous. Mine are from Parisian (exclusively at SM). I love it that SM sells social statements that are stylish and chic, yet affordable and durable. Parisian shoes can last up to a year if worn regularly.

My dear friend Jael Magbanua did my make-up as usual. She said it’s hard to apply cosmetics on me, because my facial skin can easily absorb them. Because of that, the highlights of my smokey eyes weren’t emphasized in the pictures. I don’t know if it’s because of the camera or what.

I wasn’t able to check what brands she used, but I remember her spreading Etude BB Cream (that smells like rosemary) all over my face. I used my L’Oreal Invincible Kiss Proof for my lips. I don’t know what shade of pink it belongs. I love this lip color a lot because it’s matte. I hate sheen.

Next time, I want her to try the Adriana Lima look on me. She found a 4-minute tutorial about it on YouTube. It already has million plus hits. When I watched it, I was totally in awe. That Thai girl did a great job. Just type “Me as Adriana Lima” or “Me as Scarlet Johansson” in the search tab.

Mama’s Praline Turtle Cake

This chocolate cake is different from the ordinary one because of the ingredients. For this Praline Turtle Cake, Mom used the following:

1/2 cup butter, 1 cup brown sugar, 1 can (14 ounces) sweetened condensed milk, 1 cup chopped pecans (but Mom used cashew nuts instead), 2 cups all purpose flour, 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa, 2 cups granulated sugar, 1 1/2 tsp baking soda, 1 1/2 baking powder, 1 tsp salt, 2 eggs, 1 cup sour cream, 1/2 canola oil, 1 tsp vanilla extract, 1 tsp white vinegar. Mom used ganache chocolate for the frosting.

Toryano’s Bontee Toasted Siopao

Mom found out about this siopao when she once went to Toryano’s Chicken Haus in Bangkal to buy dinner. This is not your ordinary siopao, because it’s not steamed. Instead, it’s baked or should I say, toasted in a brick oven. I like this because of the crunch. This siopao is stuffed with egg and shredded chicken. Each box contains 8 pieces. I also heard the owners are planning to expand their market for this product all over the country.

My Cheesy Hotdog Sandwich

I’ve been experimenting a lot in the kitchen lately, and a few days ago I figured I make my own spread. I used a slice of Queso de Bola, hotdog, butter and McCormick’s Spicy Italian Blend to taste.

First I melted the cheese in a heated pan with butter, then I added the hotdog and spicy blend, and voila! It’s ready. I suggest you serve it while hot. I know you think it looks disgusting because of the presentation, but it tastes good. I got the idea from Cheese Whiz’s cheese spread hotdog flavor.

Oatmeal and Coffee w/ Cinnamon

This combination is perfect for my cold afternoon snacks. I’ve always loved oatmeals, and I can’t think of any other brand that I trust other than Quaker. I’ve gotten so used to that blonde man with a hat. Of course this carbo meal wouldn’t be complete without a hot cup of coffee with cinnamon (to add aroma). Don’t put too much of the latter cause it might destroy the taste of the coffee. I should know.

Nissin Cup Noodles

I love Noodles, and the only local noodle brand that got my taste is Nissin. I don’t like Quickchow, Payless or even Knorr. I don’t know what’s with Nissin Cup Noodles that makes me so fond of it. Maybe it’s because of the memory that goes along with this meal.

This actually reminds me of my boyfriend. We were in a long distance relationship during our first few months of being a couple; and whenever we call each other, I used to eat this all the time. This was also the first food that we ate together. I remember it was Beef flavor. Sweet!

Oishi Manju’s Baked Korean Cake

I’ve been a fan of this baked Korean cake since I was nine years old. I can still recall the first time I bought a box of these delicious treat was also the first time I went to the mall without my parents.

My Mom was in the hospital that time, and my Papa was still at work. My sister and I were asked to buy some food at the mall nearby. We bought fried chicken and of course, Oishi Manju. I don’t know if my Mom remembers this, but it’s very vivid in my memory.

Oatmeal Cookies

Oatmeal cookies are really one of the best cookies in the whole world. It’s healthy and tasty. When I discovered that Quaker came up with the idea of having oat cookies, I almost jumped for joy. Well, that’s an exaggerated statement but I was close to doing it. Anyway, my favorite flavor is Apple & Cinnamon. I also liked Alman’s Oatmeal Cookies and Oatmeal Brownies. Isn’t it obvious that I’m a big oatmeal fan?

Chocolate Everything

Even now that I’m already an adult, I still find every mall’s chocolate section very enchanting. It’s like I’m in a cloud nine whenever I pass by this area. Why, because chocolates have been my most wanted snack of all time. I find comfort in it whenever I feel that a negative vibe is getting into my system. Chocolates give me a certain delight that no other snack can. One more thing, chocolates always bring out the child in me.

Hard & Soft Candies

I love Willy Wonka and Trolli candies big time. Actually, all the candies sold in Candy Corner are likeable. Maybe you find it weird that I consider candies as snacks. Yes, it really is but sometimes I just want something to munch on like Nerds, Gobstopper, Runts and some soft candies like gummy worms (and other creatures).

However, I can slowly sense the ill effect of candies on my teeth. I’ve been having sensitivity pain lately, and I guess it’s a sign that I should start getting rid of it. Thanks to SENSODYNE for being my partner against tooth ache.

Who says rice meals can’t be considered as snacks? I call it heavy snacks. Whenever I’m famished and I couldn’t wait for the main meal any longer, I always resort to chicken meals. I’m a huge lover of fried or grilled chicken, but I love the first one the most. Maybe if I’m allergic to it, I’d still eat it anyway. I just can’t live without chicken!

Another brand that caught me was Onitsuka Tiger. I'm not familiar with the brand at all, but when I Googled it, I gave it an instant liking. I love its striped Mexico 66 Line, which is actually the most famous brand of Onitsuka Tiger shoes. Good thing Sneaker Club have them. If I win this contest, I'd pick Onitsuka Tiger for sure!

Katrina's Thought Bubbles: Jerk Lines Alert

The boys from Boys Night Out of Magic 89.9 talked about the famous jerk lines used by most couples in their show last night, and they even trended it on Twitter Philippines (Here is the link of the thread, if you want to get a dose of all those witty and funny remarks from the Twitter World). I love it, because it became a sort of "public announcement" (as Sam YG says it) to all the victims out there. On that note, I'm listing the top 5 (in no particular order) jerk lines I've encountered so far. Tell me if you've also heard of them before.

"It's not you, it's me."

This is the worst and most battered line of all, and only jerks say this. I can't believe people use this big lie. I know this sounds corny but if you really don't want the person anymore, better say the whole truth even if it hurts. Don't make him/her solve the puzzle alone. Admit the true reason why you don't want to hang in the relationship anymore. That way you save yourself from being tagged as a selfish and manipulative bastard.

"I don't want commitment. I don't want to be attached."

I'm not convinced with people saying this stuff. I mean, what good will they get if they play cold shoulder on love? I think they only say this to hide their mushy emotions and to come off as independent and strong-willed, when they're actually not. I'm sorry, but I'm totally not buying the No-Strings-Attached and Friends-With-Benefits peg you're trying to pull off. I'm sure you can't keep your feelings in check as time passes by.

"Let's have a cool off, but please don't go."

Cooling off is giving each other space in a relationship. It's the period when partners decide to avoid extended contact. It's like an unofficial breakup, so to speak. If you're smart enough, you don't ever fall for this trap. If they need space, set them free right away and grant them the unlimited space they crave for! Don't let yourself be just his/her option. Spending some time apart while having problems won't do any good to a couple.

"I won't make you cry."

Ows? Di nga. I've heard of this a lot of times, and it just makes me laugh. I'm so amused with the power of this line that sort of hypnotizes men in general. Why is it that every man tend to say this all the time? Do they know what this statement even mean? It's impossible not to make a girl cry, because we're born to let out all our hurt feelings through that act. If you want to make us feel better, you can say something practical instead.

"Let's forget about this and start all over again, shall we?"

I really think starting over easily doesn't apply to a certain mistake that almost tore your heart open. There's no way one can forget something that shattered his/her world and being that instant just by hearing that stupid line. Don't be a jerk by assuring your partner something like nothing even happened. You can't just say that, and get the forgiveness you want right away. Winning something back takes time, effort and genuineness.

That's it, folks. Do they sound familiar to you? Have you heard of them or have you ever used them at some point? I guess we don't see our patterns, until they're laid out in front of us. Gastronomy: Classic Savory

My mantra for 2012 is that I am going to be an ULTIMATE FOODIE. Bold and all caps for emphasis. Food never failed to make me happy these days. I love experimenting on new snack ideas and stuff like that. I guess what I'll try to do next is learn how to bake a cake. Hopefully I can make it taste as great as my Mom's.

To add to my growing passion for food is my boyfriend who just enrolled in a culinary course at The Institute of International Culinary and Hospitality Entrepreneurship (I-CHEF). I'm so happy for him, because he's now beginning to materialize one of his dreams, plus I now have a chef of my own. Aww yeah!

Now in Gastronomy, I'm going to review the home of the original tenderest and juiciest chicken in the Philippines since 1950 -- the Classic Savory (SM Davao branch). My family and I went there last Sunday to celebrate my sister's 19th birthday. This is a blogworthy experience because it's our first try there.

We ordered their famous Savory Whole Chicken, Sate Miki, Beef Stir Fry with Broccoli, Special Turon, Coffee & Cream Delight and some beverage. I really can't get over the taste of their chicken. It tasted so good, I wanna try having the whole serving for myself alone. Here are the food photos I got.

Beef Stir Fry and Broccoli is one of their latest additions to their menu. I like it since I'm a big fan of broccoli. The Special Turon is also a winner. To my readers abroad, "turon" is a Pinoy snack dish made of thinly sliced bananas dusted with brown sugar and rolled in spring roll wrapper and fried (Wikipedia, 2012).

Coffee & Cream Delight is made of coffee gelatin cubes and cream. It tasted like a melted mocha ice cream for me. My sister Mikee enjoyed it, but I didn't. Maybe I just expected something better because of the name. It sounded so delicious and sophisticated, at least for me. But all in all, the food was great there!

I also give two thumbs up to their customer service. We were a bit demanding to the waiters because it was already high noon that time, and we were starving when we arrived from church; but still they attended to us courteously with their mega watt smiles. They were so gracious in considering our every favor.

I hope I get to dine there again as soon as possible. I wasn't too satisfied with the amount of savory chicken I ate. I want more, and with more I mean I want a whole of it all for myself. Mama Bet’s Cookbook: Holidays 2011

Happy New Year!!!

Pardon me as I rake the ashes of 2011, because I wasn’t really contented about how the past year went for me. It has brought me a lot of frustrations. About academics, I wasn’t able to graduate on time and my thesis got extended. Regarding my social life, me and some of my close friends began to grow apart as some inevitable circumstances came. Those things had great effect on me, especially on my temper. I became too sensitive, sulky and low-hearted. It was like the melancholic and choleric side of me joint forces to make me miserable.

My despair has not only caused trouble to myself, but also to those people I hold dear in my heart. Because I acted like it’s the end of the world for me, I also disappointed those I consider so special. I stopped showing them how blessed I am to have them around. Instead, I built a wall without them in it and drove them away. I shut myself from ways of reaching out to them, which in turn made them feel that I didn’t want them in my life. I didn’t mean to hurt them. It’s just that I still didn’t know how to deal with setbacks constructively. I’m still groping even now.

Bad times may be part of our yearly happenings, but there also are pleasant ones. I can say with a smile on my face, that I somehow found a silver lining in my gray 2011 sky. There are a great number of things that made me thankful about the past year. I got to dine at different restaurants. That’s something since I’m a big foodie. I got to meet new cool friends (You know who you are). My blog gained a lot of followers and visitors. My boyfriend and I celebrated our four years of being together. Lastly, I got to finish all my major and minor subjects apart from thesis.

I can’t believe another year has passed again. I don’t usually feel this giddy about new years, because knowing myself I’m very pessimistic; but you know what, I have a very positive impression about 2012. The moment our clock struck 12, I instantly felt that this year is going to be a good one for me. I pray that it’s God’s way of telling me that I am finally going to start getting hold of my dreams this year. I also hope that this unusual optimism that I have in me now will eventually turn into something beneficial for me and my loved ones’ future. God willing!

I’ve already let my views out about 2011. Now, let me discuss about how my family and I celebrated the holidays at home, particularly the food my Mom prepared for us. And by the way before I proceed, it was Mousy and Caramel’s first time to be with us this recent Christmas. I wasn’t able to take a picture of Caramel with Santa and Snowman because she keeps on moving. I could only take blur photos of her, too bad.

Christmas Eve Celebration

We had the delicious Blueberry Cheesecake, Mango Delight, Swiss Deli Ham, a whole lot of Lasagna, Queso de Bola, some fruits and this non-alcoholic beverage called Ma. December 24 was such a happy day especially for me, because my boyfriend came and had dinner with us. Actually he was also there to get the Chocolate Cake we prepared as a gift for him and his family. The last time he visited was two years ago. I didn’t want him to visit me here, because I’m afraid my parents wouldn’t like his presence at home. But I think they feel better about him now.

Anyway, let’s talk about the food again. It was Mom’s first time to make a Blueberry Cheesecake, but it really tasted so heavenly. It didn’t feel like it was her first time to do so. My friends Lerr and Regine got to try it, and they said it’s perfect! Mom used DariCreme Margarine and Crushed M.Y. San Grahams for the pie shells; Milkmaid Evap, Magnolia Butter, Philadelphia Cream Cheese and Knox Gelatin for the filling; lastly, she used Cornstock Blueberries for the important topping. She refrigerated the pie shells overnight, and then added the filling the next day.

Mom used Chiffon Cake from Bread Factory, Evap & Condensed Milk, and of course ripe mangoes for the Mango Delight. She sliced the chiffon cake thinly, and layered it with the milk and mangoes consecutively. She prepared it the Mango Float style, except that she didn’t use Graham crackers. I’m not a fan of it though, because I don’t like mangoes and chiffon cakes but my boyfriend tried it, and he loved it big time. The Lasagna was a special one because she added some Swiss Deli Sausages in it. I ate a lot of this dish, since I’m a huge lover of pasta.

New Year’s Eve Celebration

For the New Year’s Eve celebration or Media Noche, Mom prepared a 2.9kg medium-sized turkey for the main course. We also had Ham, but I didn’t take a photo of it anymore. Because our Turbo Broiler is just very small, she only cooked the half first. She barbecued the other half the next day. Mom marinated the turkey in soy sauce, calamansi juice, salt, garlic, lemon grass, pepper and rosemary seeds. The latter made the dish smell so good while being cooked. Next year, I plan to buy some ingredients that will make our next Turkey dish taste even better.

We also had Chicken Sotanghon which is also very tasty and siksik, because it’s filled with vegetables like carrots, sweet peas, cauliflower and spring onions. It’s also filled with my favorite chicken meat, liver and heart. Oh, so yummy! The Chocolate Cake was a special one because Mom even used Anchor butter instead of DariCreme. She also used Goya EasyMelt Buttons for the ganache frosting instead of Dutche Chocolate Bar. Mom also bought us a lot of chocolates. That 250g Ritter Sport Alpine Milk Chocolate bar in a nice sky blue wrap was all mine.

I’m posting that photo of our favorite Gardenia bread and Guava Jelly spread, because the latter has always been a significant part of our dining table during Christmas season. It reminds my Mom of how they used to celebrate the holidays back then when grandfather was still alive. Mom said Grandpa wouldn’t miss a chance of buying them Guava Jelly every Christmas. This memory of my Grandpa has remained seared in my Mom’s mind, and now she’s passing the tradition to us, her children. We’ll surely continue doing it until we’ll have a family of our own.

“Only one can break the curse, and only one knows the truth.”

Just like any other kid, I was also once a very imaginative and I’d like to believe that I still am until now. I was and still is mesmerized by the mere thought of castles, royalties, fairies, magic and even dark powers. Those fancy stuff are part of my phase as a child who believes in fairytales beyond doubt. I even remember having all kinds of classic story books a kid knows. They even come with beautiful boxes and cases. I didn’t know what came into me and my sisters. We destroyed all of them in a heartbeat like outraged monsters. How perfectly dreadful!

For a stretch there I thought I’ve already gotten to grips with my enchanted mind’s eye, but here I am grappling with it all over again in spite of everything. A few weeks ago, I browsed YouTube for some trailers of new Hollywood TV Series that could get me hooked. I found only a few, and one of them is ABC Studios Production’s Once Upon a Time. The title itself thrilled me to watch for it. The series now has seven episodes. I’m still on the fifth, and I’m totally riveted by it. I can’t wait to see the developments of this new favorite show of mine.

Centers on a woman with a troubled past who is drawn into a small town in Maine where the magic and mystery of Fairy Tales just may be real.

Once Upon a Time stars Ginnifer Goodwin, Jennifer Morrison, Lana Parrilla, Josh Dallas, and many more. It revolves around the classic characters from fairytales that were trapped in a place where all their happy endings were stolen – Our World. The main characters are Snow White, Prince James, the Evil Queen and Emma Swan (Snow and James’ daughter). For a little information, Emma is considered to be the savior who is destined to break the Evil Queen’s curse and to free our beloved legendary fellows from the spell of not knowing who they really are.

If that hint sounded vague to you, I suggest you spend time with the Once Upon a Time and I’m quite certain you’ll be drawn to it. Anyway, before I end this piece let me share you some points about the show that fascinated me a great deal. First, is that it made me become a kid again. Why, because almost all my favorite storybook characters have connection with each other in this series. I also like it that Snow White is not the dainty damsel we know. Here, she’s the independent and strong girl type who isn’t afraid to fight if necessary.

The second thing is the moral I get from each encounter the individuals of this story has. Just like in every classics, the most important thing we can gain after reading them is the lesson learned. For instance: “Believing in even the possibility of a happy ending is a very powerful thing.” You can have some more if you watch it. The third would be the production’s effort and expertise in coming up with a huge show like this on TV that I can compare to an epic movie. Two thumbs up to them! I hope it will reap more supporters, and of course, longer telly life span.

PS: I also heard in the local news that there actually is a Filipino in the cast. I haven't seen him yet, but they said he plays the role of one of Snow White's 7 Dwarfs -- Bashful. I'm just so proud of him!

MERRY HAPPY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!

Consider this image that I personally made as my Christmas card to all of you. I hope you like it! I also hope you'll all have a fabulous celebration tonight. I'm ultimately stoked for 12 midnight. Mom prepared some goodies like Blueberry Cheesecake, Lasagna, Mango Delight, Queso de Bola, fruits and of course the star of the Noche Buena -- our favorite Ham from Swiss Deli. Let's get it on tummy baby! I can't wait to dig in.

One more thing that made me happy tonight is when my boyfriend came to visit me. Although it was just a two-hour fleeting one, it still caused a 100-watt incandescent smile in my face. I'm glad my family's OK with him now. Thanks Mama and Papa. And by the way, it's also his 23rd birthday tomorrow. I'll post about the details of our Christmas and New Year bash in the days ahead. I'm having this stupid blogger's block again, and it's totally giving me a lot of stress like it's all there is to live for. It's a big deal that it actually caused me to have bruxism which is a medical term for teeth-grinding. What the fudge! Another source of anxiety I had was when I found out that one of my Facebook friends actually used my four year old blog name as her online shop's site name. What a copy cat! I freaked out and seethed! I didn't want to engage in a petty quarrel, so I confronted her in the NICEST way possible. I told her this:

I could use a break from that scary bit so, I let myself loose at Abreeza Ayala Mall (despite the rainy day) and had some unforgettable gastronomic trip with my boyfriend. We also bumped into some of my friends. What a small world! It was nice seeing you there Maicie, Regina, Christine and Tessa! Ciovic and I had our scrumptious lunch at Bigby's Cafe and Restaurant. We feasted upon Belly Busters Food Platter. It consists of "The ultimate combo of their famous barbecued babyback ribs, grilled rodeo chops and smoky pork belly, served in one heaping platter with garlic rice, buttered veggies and crispy onion rings." What a blast!

Sunday Affair

Before I begin, let me just get off the subject a bit. I'm not supposed to blog yet, because my mind and my heart are still not in order. I'm confused, and I feel ill. To tell you the truth, I'm seething since last week. I'm stewing over something, or should I say someone. It was like my reptilian brain kicked in and wanted him to grovel and admit defeat. I'm so peeved through his thick skull.

I already cried it all out, and I felt better after that. Now I can smile and goof around as usual, but I still can't stop thinking about it. Thanks for lending me your ears Janine. You're such a loving sister! I just wish though that we ("opponent" and I) could talk about it productively soon. I am determined to hash out our disagreement and give him a second shot, but he has to EARN it.

I felt giddy with joy because my family did something that made me consign what happened to oblivion even for a day. We celebrated my sister Mikee's 12th birthday last Sunday by going to church together, dining out and shopping. We ate at Roadhouse Cafe at SM City. I've always wanted to bond with my stomach and palate there. Thanks to my mother for granting my unspoken wish.

What I like about Roadhouse Cafe is the eye-popping interior design. It looks very sophisticated because of the finely arranged table settings. I love the paintings and frames of vintage vehicles they have all over the place. This restaurant is elegant enough to make diners think that the menu will cost them a lot.

Roadhouse Cafe serves scrumptious Filipino and Western cuisine. The items on their menu usually starts at 200php approximately. Another thing that I love about this resto is their accommodating staff. They attend to our every queries and needs without a trace of indifference from their pleasant-looking faces.

I wasn't able to take photos of us, because I got too shy to do so. I just did food photography instead. The following are the dishes that we dug in mercilessly...

We would have their famous steak dishes, except that each one costs 200+php/100 gram. At that time, the least gram they had was 400g. That would definitely cost us too much. We'd rather spend the money on something else. Leaving that aside, the food was delicious especially the Chicken Cordon Bleu and Choco Crepe, but they're not as sinfully delectable as I expected. Their plating is also a little boring. Sure I have high expectations on specialty food spots like this. I could say Mom's Kare-Kare is better than theirs. Gotta love my own, eh?

Boredom Busters

Not being in school, means being in a rut! Being busy about something is always better than being busy doing nothing. I actually miss the feeling of being swamped with academic stuff. I miss whining about it, I should say. Just staying at home doing the same thing over and over again is beginning to kill me. I need to have some fish to fry. In other words, I'm dying to be employed. It really is true that human beings never get satisfied with what they have, where they are and whatnot. I'm cringing, cause I'm guilty as sin.

You see, I have this place all for myself every weekdays from 8am to 5pm. Aside from trying so hard to revise my thesis manuscript, all I do is just surf the web, download/watch movies and TV series, listen to my music library, think of what to cook for lunch, work on my household assignment, stare at oblivion, and worry about my safety. I'm like a slob! Those activities may not be exhausting, but they're unproductive. But anyhow, now I'll be sharing again the things that bust the boredom out of my system.

In other news, I had a great day yesterday with my buddies. Hollers out to Ate Jael, Maicie, Christine, Ed Ralph, Ate Cyndi and Ella. I enjoyed some serious and mature conversation I had with Ate Jael and Ed Ralph. The dinner was also fantastic with all the hearty laughs and inane talks. I'm so glad I got to be close to these crazy and fun guys before I left UP. When my batchmates graduated, I promised to myself that I will be a full-fledged anti-social creature. However, they came into my life and saved me from solitude. That sounds so melodramatic, but it's really what I feel for them. I'm looking forward to be with them in the year-ender gathering we're planning to hold in Samal this 11th of December. I hope Mom allows me to have a sleepover somewhere this time.

Baked Penne Pasta

Mom prepared this mouth-watering pasta as the main dish for her 51st birthday. She used San Remo Penne Pasta, Magnolia Processed Cheese (not sure with the name), ground beef, bell pepper and a little bit of Mc Cormick Spicy Italian Pasta Blend. The process is just the same with that of Baked Mac, I guess.

Crinkles

With my continuous pestering, Mom finally called the shots at letting our sweet tooth sink in these tasty crinkles during the long weekend. It was her first time to bake cookies so there were still some flaws. I’m pretty sure that with more practice, she’ll be able to perfect this recipe. She used Bensdorf Cocoa Powder for this.

Vegeroni Pasta

This is a Carbonara style pasta dish. Mom used San Remo Vegeroni Pasta. I find it so cute because it has three different vegetable pasta shapes and colors. Pardon the photo quality because what I’m talking about isn’t that visible in the picture provided. We had this for our Halloween celebration, by the way.

Mango Delight and Red Velvet Cake

I honestly didn’t enjoy the Mango Delight, because I am totally not a fan of fruity cakes and I don’t like mangoes. The one and only mango recipe that I have learned to love is Mango Float, and nothing else. About the Red Velvet Cake, Mom thought that the sourness overpowered the sweetness. Try again next time, Mom!

Waldorf Salad

This one’s supposed to have lettuce, but Mom forgot to buy some. Too bad, eh? I could have loved this salad better, if there were greens. As you can see, she made use of walnuts and fruits like apple and grapes. She also added raisins, cheese and of course the most important ingredient – the mayonnaise.

The Things We Do For Fashion

About my day, my boredom took its toll on me. I was all alone at home utterly in a rut so I decided to be vain and play dress up using my HP Mini Camera, hence the noisy quality of the photos. I just enhanced them using the ever dependable, Photoscape. I used my favorite accessories as props, by the way. That neon green pair of feather danglings is the newest, and I just got a purple one of the same style. My collection of chic trinkets is slowly making its way to become bigger and better. This Christmas season, I will definitely add some Mia Casa glamour to it. I hope the gods are looking down on me for my fashionable endeavor. Good night, folks!

Of Assorted Thoughts and Stuff

I don't want to use the term "random" due to the fact that it has become an overrated word used for blogs. Just let me use "assorted" instead. So yeah, this post is going to be about different things running in my head. My mind is not in its proper state to elaborate on a single subject, as of the moment. My blogger-rific train of thought is currently unavailable. I'm kind of lost, because of my blogger's block that caused my week-long hiatus. I'm done with my explanation, let us now proceed to what I have to share:

This is how happy I am. My ghosts came out.

Last week was my first week to be out of school! It feels really great not having to worry about academic matters. Well, I'm not done with my thesis yet, but my adviser told me that it only needs some minor revisions. I can't wait to wrap it up. I can't wait to say "I'm all set and ready to march this April 2012!"

My first Camiguin escapade last February 2010. This was taken at White Island.

I'm planning to go with my sister Janine on their Arts and Society class' trip to Camiguin this February 2012. I miss that paradise a great deal! I wanna bathe in Sto. Nino Cold Spring, Katibawasan Falls and Arden Hot Spring one more time. I'll try to persuade my parents if they could grant me that wish. I'm crossing my fingers!

This is one of the TV series I've been watching lately alongside The Lying Game, New Girl, Community, Pretty Little Liars and Breaking Bad. I like it because it involves teens and magic, but I can't say that I'm into it. This show's Pilot episode is a little off for me. Some acts and lines were corny and cliche, but I can forgo them and still give TSC a chance. I'm still on the 4th episode.

Devouring Movies and TV Series

Apart from my Mom's scrumptious and delectable home-made goodness, I've been devouring a lot of movies and TV series these past few days, and that's because I'm no longer that stressed with school. What a relief that I can do what I love to do from now on. I only have thesis (due on November 10, 2011) to think about, and guess what, I don't want to talk about it. It's perfectly a colossal waste of time. I mentioned before that I'm not a movie/series buff, but I'm taking that back now. I am now a full-fledged couch potato. How 'bout that? The following productions are so cool, they don't bore me:

LIFE AS WE KNOW IT

May I just add that Josh Duhamel is my new ULTIMATE HOLLYWOOD CRUSH alongside, Channing Tatum, Ian Harding, Nicholas D'Agosto and Milo Ventimiglia. I so love him in Life As We Know It. Aside from the fact that he's too-hot-I-can't-handle-him in that film, I also dig the story. Katherine Heighl and him make a really cute couple. I love that Holly and Eric's story began with friendship, and that they weren't in a whirlwind romance unlike other chick flicks I've watched. Another thing I love about it is that it's almost a two-hour film, which means his exposure is quite long!

Mama Bet's Cook Book: Oreo Truffles

One of the desserts that Mom does for us on a regular basis is her Oreo Truffles. She knew about it when she was scanning through Laureen Uy's blog Break My Style. You can read her post about it in this link. Laureen got hers as a gift from SweeTetite. Curiosity got the best of my Mom, so she searched for the recipe.

Mom used the following:

1 pkg. of PHILADELPHIA Cream Cheese (softened)

3 packs of 137g Oreo Cookies (finely crushed)

Deutche or Goya Chocolate Buttons for coating (melted)

Mom mixed the softened cream cheese and finely crushed cookie crumbs. Then she shaped them into I inch balls; dipped them in melted chocolate; and placed them on paper baking sheet. She refrigerated them until they become firm. Mom would prefer using brown sheets, except that she couldn't find some at NCCC Mall. They only have white and some colored ones. She just recently discovered that Gaisano Mall Supermarket has complete baking materials and ingredients. Without further ado, here's the finished product. Pardon me for the hazy and noisy photos. They were taken using a 2 Megapixel Camera Phone only.

They taste oh so divine! My friends who have tasted this dessert said it's not nakakaumay, and I can attest to that (Sorry but I don't know the direct English translation of the italicized word. Buzz me if you know the answer). We also made fun of the packaging by sticking the logo I made for my Mom's future business. How I wish her dream would come true in an instant. I will definitely pray for that, and I hope you do too.

Pretty Little Liars Binge

I'm no closet queen when it comes to my enthusiasm for ABC's Pretty Little Liars. I have an absolute fascination over that TV series, and I'm not going to hide it. I do believe that if certain things makes us happy, then by all means, we should not hold back in letting it show. Y'all agree?

I may get a lot of eye-rolling for this, but I love PLL! It's because of the on-going mystery that engulfs the whole story. It's very catchy, and that's what makes it more alluring. I love it that they have a mix of different genres. It has romance, drama, comedy, action, suspense.. name it, PLL has it!

I've read a lot of negative critic reviews about the show, but those stuff will not change the fact that PLL is one of my ultimate guilty pleasures. We have different interests, but that doesn't necessarily make us less of a person. It may be a cliche and predictable show, but hey, others also are. Walang basagan ng trip!

PLL S02E13 The First Secret. Halloween Special.

I just finished my PLL marathon, and now I'm thinking of re-running it. The "Over My Dead Body" mid-season finale has made my heart pound fast, literally. It may seem a tad bit OA, but that episode had clouded my mind with so many questions and further confusions like the following:

Will Spencer get back with Toby? Why did she have to kiss Wren?

PILIPINAS GOT TALENT

The third season of Pilipinas Got Talent recently ended with a bang last night. The show has been a trending topic not only on Twitter, but also in every household in the country with the word-class Pinoy talent it showcases. However despite the success of PGT 3, not everyone was satisfied with the results. As we all know, the grand winner in this prestigious search will be determined via the people's texts and online votes and not on the judges. That is a practice worldwide. Anyhow, let me not dwell on that negative issue because the Maansinhon Trio are still worthy to bag the 2 Million pesos somehow. Congratulations to them! They're great singers, it's just that I have a different bet by the name of El Gamma Penumbra. Here's a video of their spectacular performance:

What can you say? This group is truly an outstanding group! They make me feel proud to be a Pinoy (Filipino). As you can see, they were promoting the cultures and tourist destinations of our country. What I love most in their act was when they showed the unity of Muslims and Christians. The sense of positivism and nationalism that they're advocating are what the whole world really need in times like this. Well, need I say more? I hope the Department of Tourism sees how excellent they are and let them be a part of our government's tourism projects! They may not have won the competition, they still have the support of the majority of the Filipinos nation and worldwide.

I have always wanted El Gamma Penumbra to win right from the very start. They actually got the idea of shadow play from the Silhouttes of America's Got Talent. You can watch them in this YouTube video. EGP's act may not be original, but their concept is. I don't condemn them for copying others, because for me it's a positive thing that the Filipino talents can also do what they can. I definitely think EGP did a great job in PGT 3's Grand Finals. They even got a standing ovation from the judges and the crowd. They gave me goosebumps all throughout! I just couldn't believe that they didn't even reach the Top 3. Their performance was awesome, and I believe that they deserve to win!

Right then I thought I needed to take a breather, so it won't literally and figuratively weigh me down. Trying a new chin-grazing 'do feels great. From now on, I will try to be adventurous with hairstyles I deem suit me best. This bob cut gives me the feeling that I am ready to work it in the corporate world. My new girl buddies (Jael and Maicie) and I had our sort of "sem-ender activity" last week. I’ve got to know them just months ago, and it felt like our friendship has already existed for such a long time. I can be my bizarre self when I’m with them, and I’m glad that they always make me feel like I belong since I’m new to their group. If not for them, I would have become a loner in my last sem in UP Min. We have so many things in common, and as we mulled over our similarities, we found out that the three of us consider FOOD as our top de-stresser.

We went to Abreeza Ayala Mall, because Maicie insisted. It was her first time there so we gave her a chance to see the much-talked about mall in Davao. LOL! We searched for a nice place to feed our starving stomachs, and decided to dine at Pancake House instead. I ordered their Jumbo House Burger, Maicie had their Blueberry Pancake and Jael tried their Spaghetti Set with Mushroom Soup. There was nothing special with the ambience of the joint, but I honestly think that the Abreeza branch was better than their branches from other malls.

It looks small in the photo, but it was really big. I needed help from my girls to gobble this all up. I could say this was one of the best-tasting burgers I’ve had. The cheese, beef patty and bacon were so delicious. I was also very delighted with the generous amount veggies and French fries. Two thumbs up for this dish!

Special Spaghetti Set with Cream of Mushroom Soup

This was Ate Jael’s order. I didn’t like the spaghetti, because it was not that saucy. I loved the sandwich and the mushroom soup though. That’s what friends are for. We have conjugal properties even on food! Haha.

After Pancake House, we had another food indulgence at my beloved spot… at Zabadani Café. We totally had carbo overload that day, but we didn’t mind it at all. We thought we needed that a lot. I wanted to spoil myself since I've been really beat the whole semester, though I’ve never really tucked myself away from my ultimate stress reliever despite my busy scholastic life. At Zab, we order Grilled Cheese Oreganao (for me), Bubble Milk Tea (for me and ate Jael), Beef Kabsa (for ate Jael), Beef Squares and Mochaccino (for Maicie). Here are our shots…

Because we love food big time, we came up with an idea of setting up a gastronomic meet every month. We kicked off our plan that day, and our next stop would be at TGIF! It’s time for me to save some moolah (Off topic and weird, but I can imagine myself singing this line like Jessy from New Girl). Before I let out my over excitement on that matter, let me show you the rest of the photos we took.

We couldn’t get enough of Sophia (the little girl from Zab) and Ramadeey’s (the uber adorable Persian cat from Zab) extreme cuteness! Pia was such a sweet kiddo because she loved hugging Ate Jael and brushing my hair. It was like she knew us quite well that she ran straight to us the moment we went in. One thing we noticed with her was that she tend to hit us, and one thing she doesn’t know is that I get so scared with tantrum kids. Maybe she just felt that comfortable with our presence. But nevertheless, she’s still very charming! I hope to see her again next time.

It's Pretty Little Liars Halloween Episode today. I wanna watch! I've seen their outfits, and I love that of Alison, Emily and Spencer. Who would you want to dress like?

I'm currently downloading the first & second episode of Zooey Deschanel's New Girl. I wanna give it a try. My boyfriend says it's a fun series.

I want to collect a lot of plume and peacock feather dangles. I'll be spoiling myself with those eye candies this holiday when I have money.

I hate my inferiority complex. It's one of the things that make my life a little too difficult to deal with. I hope I could gain confidence.

If I feel that I've given too much of my attention to something or someone, that's the time when I think I have to lie low. Like, bye for now.

I've been keeping my hair the same way, and it's weighing me down. So, I thought of considering a new 'do. What style can you suggest girls?

I'm so happy that I'm now almost free from all those academic pressures. All I have to think about is my THESIS! I hope it gets approved.

It seems like our fridge never cease to have cakes. I can't wait for Mom to get into pastry biz, because her creations just keep getting better. Avail of it, yes?

I have been so stressed for the past weeks’ academic binge. I lacked some shut eye, which resulted to constant headaches. And now that school’s over, I’m slowly getting back what I had deprived myself of – slumber… and of course, blogging. Teehee. I’m still not supposed to do this, but I really feel the need to take some time off. After the scholastic breakdown I had last week, I imposed myself an unwritten rule that I shouldn’t blog until such time that my thesis is far from over. I honestly feel that I’m nearly done, so let me take a breather just this once.

Enough said.

I got to let out my artistic side again because of our Filipino 21 (Philippine Folklore) subject. We were asked to create something that can popularize our country’s ethnic art as our final project. I chose the Maranao Okir Art, because it’s very popular. This art is known for its exuberance and vitality. It also crosses different forms. The Maranao is one of the thirteen tribes of Muslim in the Philippines. It is the subject of researchers’ interest most of the time, thus making them the most studied tribe in the country. As far as I know, it is the most extravagant Muslim tribe.

Since I have been suffering from cognitive overload lately, I couldn’t think of an original okir art. I apologize, because I just copied what I found in the web. I only used pastel crayons and illustration board. No pun intended. I just didn’t have enough resources and time to exert my utmost effort in crafting my own design. If given another chance, I will definitely do my best to show you my own interpretation of the said art. Spoken like a real beauty queen, eh? Anyhow, below is an abstract okir art made by a student from Mindanao State University (MSU).

I wasn't able to take the photos of all the participants' dishes because people were all over them already. I love Iraq's Qatayef, Cambodia's fudge something and Sri Lanka's spicy beef curry. I couldn't get enough of them!

I'm talking about how great they are with full conviction because my sister Janine is part of it. She's with the Afghanistan group. I heard Kazakhstan group won though. They did a wonderful cultural dance anyway. I just hated the sound system. It was awful! We weren't able to enjoy all the country's music that much. Anyway, do you wanna see how she looked like that day? Here it is.

Weight Training Program

Have a happy heart while doing your exercise.

Goals/Objectives

To gain weight while undergoing this weight training program.
To have a more fit and healthy lifestyle.
To attain the normal BMI all thoughout.

Exercises (for the 4 major muscle groups):

Bicycle (ABS)

Lie face up on your mat and place your hands behind your head, lightly supporting it with your fingers.
Bring the knees in to the chest and lift the shoulder blades off the floor without pulling on the neck.
Rotate to the left, bringing the right elbow towards the left knee as you straighten the other leg.
Switch sides, bringing the left elbow towards the right knee.
Continue alternating sides in a 'pedaling' motion for 1-3 sets of 12-16 reps.

Dumbbell Rows (BACK)

Bend over at the waist until the torso is parallel to floor or at 45 degree angle, abs in and knees slightly bent.
Hold medium-heavy weights straight down without locking the elbows.
Bend the elbows and pull the weights up until the elbows are level with the torso in a rowing motion. Try to keep the shoulders relaxed and away from the ears.
Lower and repeat for 1-3 sets of 10-16 reps

Bench Press (CHEST)

1. Lie down on a bench or step and begin with the weights in each hand straight up over the chest, palms facing out.

2. Bend the elbows and lower the arms down until the elbows are just below the chest (arms should look like goal posts).

3. Press the weights back up without locking the elbows and bring them close together.

4. Repeat for 1 to 3 sets of 8 to 16 reps.

Alternating Lunges (LEGS)

Start with both feet together and about shoulder width apart, your back straight and core engaged.
Lunge forward until you reach 90 degrees at both knees. Make sure not to extend your front knee past your toes because it puts a lot of stress on the joint.
Push your body back up to the starting position through your front heel, alternate legs and repeat.

I chose these four exercises because of the following reasons:

1. They can help me in gaining basic strength and muscle building.

2. There is no need for complicated and difficult gym equipment.

3. They are just simple, but they can help in making me fit.

4. They can also help me improve my posture, balance and coordination.

5. These exercises can also help in developing my immune system.

So I'm back from my unannounced hiatus. My last post Child's Play: BYG Belle, which I wrote more than a week ago, got more than twenty comments for the first time. It never would have gotten that much of attention if I didn't leave my blog for nine days. LOL! Big thanks to those who managed to visit and follow Mystic Nymph, even when I didn't have time to pay them a visit in return. Anyway, I'll be giving you a short synopsis on how my past week went just in case you're interested to know.

Last week was one of the worst in my scholastic life. I had my practicum & written exam in PE, thesis defense and a report in STS class. I was dog-tired that much! I got a bundle of nerves the whole time because of the pressure, lack of sleep and whatnot. I even messed up in my report and defense because my speech anxiety got the better of me! I felt embarrassed, but dwelling on it won't help me graduate so I let it pass that way. I just did things to "de-stress" me like pigging out and watching PLL.

I'm so hooked on Pretty Little Liars! I've been catching up on it since last week, and now I'm on the 18th episode of their pilot season. I love it because it's not your usual bitchy and girly girl TV series. I don't know why, but I'm really into mystery stories like that. I'm not a good judge of shows, so I may be wrong but personally, PLL has become my favorite foreign drama next to Heroes. If you ask me about the characters, I like Aria and Spencer but I think Emily (Shay Mitchell) is hotter. I wanna dress like them! Their nifty outfits are to die for! Their styles are wicked!

Aside from the story, I also love its soundtrack. One of the best songs in their collection are from Brooke Waggoner. Here are two of my fave songs from her.

I won’t discuss about my makeup in details anymore, because I’m not knowledgeable about the process of getting that look. Forgive me for my ignorance about cosmetics and how to apply it. I hope you don’t mind. I’m quite sure you know better than I do. LOL!

Wonder what’s BYG? It’s an acronym for Black, Yellow and Gray. I would make use of the Black-and-Yellow theme, except that my black shoes was borrowed by my sister for her thesis defense that day, and I don’t want to use my black boots either. My style for today’s Child’s Play is something that can somehow give reverence to the dark angel adorned in the most romantic of fabrics – LACE. This isn’t a gothic drama, by the way. I’ll be setting aside that Ange Sombre motif for our next fashion and makeup shoot.

And oh… just a brief history about that outfit. I thank God for letting my creative juices out when I need it the most. Why, because that bow lace top is actually my first DIY creation. That chiffon ribbon is from another garment, but I removed it because I felt like I want to embellish it to a top that deserves that cute detail more. How do you like it, folks? Now about my mustard yellow skirt, I’ve had it in my wardrobe for five years already. I got it way back senior high. It’s the first fashion item I bought for myself.

We had a photo shoot last Wednesday to practice Jael's make up skills with the help of her "mentor" Jaimie, whom I heard took up Fine Arts in UP Diliman before transferring here in UP Mindanao to study Communication Arts. Nice meeting you, dear! I would love to feature you in one of my blog series soon.

Anyway, that day was also our skirt day as you can see. Francis pulled off a rockstar vibe and Ali had a corporate slutty look. I'm not sure about my theme though. For me, Jael was the best dressed among the four of us. She looks like a walking doll, especially with her Fedora that I want to steal! I love it big time.

This make up is something that I can pull off daily without looking like a celebrity wannabe. It's not too obvious because of the nudy effect of tangerine. I was glad to hear from my schoolmates though that I looked blooming with that look. Thanks again to my pretty Make-up Artist.
